Octopath Traveler doesn't attempt to be more than it is. A JRPG with a heavy focus on narrative and character development. All within a beautifully decorated 2D world that constantly provides new exciting locations to uncover. It does come with the issues that RPGs suffer from such as random encounters and extensive grinding. Octopath Traveler is an RPG fans dream come true.

Octopath Traveler doesn't star one character, instead, all 8 of the unique characters each can be considered a protagonist. Each one is intricately designed with unique stories that evolve over the course of isolated chapters. Whether it's the hunter H'aanit or the dancer Primrose, every character gets their turn in the spotlight and ends story with a giant bang.

Octopath Traveler isn't about saving the world. it's about each character accomplishing very specific goals. This ensures that the star of each specific chapter remains the focus.

The biggest issue with each of the narratives comes with the interaction between the characters. With the exception of fights and very specific dialogue options, the characters never interact with one another. It's clear that the stories were written with the intention of 1 character being the primary focus but often the characters will make note that they are not alone.

The battle system reflects traditional turn-based combat with a slight change. You still perform a series of attacks over the course of a turn-based system but can charge up offensive and defensive attacks each turn. This adds to the strategy as you choose to wait to use a powerful version of a specific attack or use a slightly weaker version.

Since Octopath Traveler focuses heavily on traditional systems expect all the negative things that come with it. Random encounters and extensive grinding have not been streamlined. To progress players will need to hit these specific levels. For most players, this won't be an issue, especially with JRPG fans, but strangely a shared experience system is not available. Since each chapter requires a specific character to be at a certain level or be at a major disadvantage this can lead to a lot of vexing grinding.

The beauty and soundtrack of Octopath Traveler is excellent. A collection of soundtracks that each capture the mood of the situation, whether in battle or during an emotional moment. All brought together with beautiful 2D visuals set in a 3D world with richly detailed and distinct environments.

The PC version does come with a lot of visual and frame rate benefits. The increased power of the PC provides a smoother frame rate and more detailed sprites. However, there's no additional content and this is the same game that is available on the Nintendo Switch.

Octopath Traveler is one of the best RPGs this generation. Providing a traditional formula for modern audiences without making any sacrifices. You'll still have to endure random encounters and lots of grinding, especially with the absence of an experience share option, but these are systems that RPG fans love. Octopath Traveler is a game for RPG fans that provides 8 outstanding campaigns that'll keep you hooked from start to finish.
